Blog #15: WTO Appoints Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Okonjo-Iweala makes history being the 1st African and first woman Director- General of the WTO.

At long last, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization! I previously wrote about Okonjo-Iweala’s long campaign which that been thwarted by the previous US presidential administration. It’s fitting that she won the appointment in the month of February, which is Black History Month. Okonjo-Iweala makes Black History and breaks the glass ceiling, by becoming the first African, and the first woman to lead the WTO. What an incredible accomplishment!

After a 25-year career at the World Bank, rising to the #2 position of Managing Director, and recently serving as an African Union Special Envoy, working to garner financial resources to combat COVID-19 and to allow African countries to gain access to COVID-19 vaccines.

On Monday, February 15, 2021, the WTO announced her appointment, after she was endorsed by the United States’ President, Joe Biden. In her speech, she states that her administration’s priority will be to “implement the policy responses we need to get the global economy going again.” She also hopes to shake up the WTO so it becomes more agile and less slow-moving and bureaucratic than it has been in the past.

Her term begins on March 1, 2021 and we can hardly wait. She’s an inspiration to African and African women and girls everywhere.
